Personal Protection

Every day we read about horrible assaults on people, on the street, in their vehicles, and even in their own homes. The unfortunate truth is that no matter how careful you are, there’s no guarantee that you’ll never find yourself in a position where you have to defend yourself. Confrontations can and do happen, and it’s better to know how to protect yourself and never have to, than it is to find yourself in trouble and have no idea what you should do.

A simple Google search using the words “self defense” or “personal protection” will yield a wealth of suggestions, including pepper spray, instructional fighting DVDs, personal alarms, stun guns, and more. The fact is that if you ever are attacked, it’s likely to happen very quickly and you are not likely to have time to reach for your pepper spray.

Knowing some self-defense techniques can help you to stay safe, and increase the likelihood that you’ll be able to escape. DVDs are a good idea, but if you’re serious about self-defense, you’d be better off to sign up for a martial arts class. Not only will you learn the moves that will help you to put down an attacker, you’ll learn techniques that will help you to remain calm under pressure.

Of course there’s no shortage of weaponry available. Not everyone is comfortable carrying a gun, but there are alternatives. A Taser (also known as a stun gun) can also incapacitate an attacker, but without the finality of a bullet. And of course there’s the aforementioned pepper spray. If you are going to go with a weapon of one sort or another, it’s very important that you be able to get at it quickly, and also that you have no doubt in your own mind about your willingness and ability to use it. Never pull a weapon of any kind on an attacker if you’re not prepared to follow through – they’ll sense your weakness, and they’ll act on it.

Ideally, you’ll be able to disable your attacker and also be able to identify him or her. If you’re not able to provide identification and the attacker escapes, it’s very possible that they were caught on security camera. CCTV is so common now that it’s rare for a business to be without it, and it’s a common component of many home security systems.

Of course prevention is the best means of protection, and criminals tend to look for easy prey. So consider the best ways to protect yourself, and avoid becoming a victim.
